Comparing the 2021 and 2022 Ford Explorer

Overview of the 2022 Ford Explorer

With the arrival of a car, truck or SUV’s new model year, the default first question is “What’s new.” Providing those answers about the 2022 Ford Explorer is the very reason for this information page.

The Ford Explorer has historically been an outstanding family SUV. With that kind of crowd to contend with, it’s usually a busy time. That puts greater importance on comfortable space, convenience, power and safety. The 2022 Explorer corners each of those markets.

With the arrival of the 2022 Ford Explorer, differences between the most recent in the Explorer lineup are both little and big. To learn of the differences between the 2021 and 2022 Ford Explorer, as well as what carries over from its complete makeover two years ago, please keep reading. We then hope you will consider Wood Motor Ford in McDonald County if a test drive of the new Explorer is something you’re interested in.

2021 and 2022 Ford Explorer Comparison

While much of the 2021 Explorer carries over to the 2022 model year, which is good news to Explorer fans, there are changes and upgrades worth noting. The 2022 Explorer features base, XLT, Limited, Timberline, ST, King Ranch and Platinum trims. 2022 marks the first full year for the Timberline and King Ranch versions.

The most notable difference is the addition of the ST-Line variant. This more affordable trim combines the 2.3-liter turbo-4 with the rest of the stylish and sporty ST package. In addition, the ST trim is now available in rear-wheel drive, as opposed to all-wheel drive only.

Previously reserved for the ST trim, in 2022, higher trims in the King Ranch and Platinum come equipped with the 400-hp 3.0-liter turbo-6. That’s 35 more horsepower than in previous years. The ST performance models feature a sport-tuned suspension, blacked-out trim and larger 20-inch aluminum wheels. It is also home to the 400-hp twin-turbo V-6. New this year, an ST-Line version brings the same look, but with the turbo-4.

Most Explorers feature that 2.3-liter turbo-4, good for 300 hp and pair to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive will remain standard, although all-wheel drive becomes more of an option.

A hybrid powertrain is defined by a 318 hp 3.3-liter V-6 with an electric motor/generator, battery pack and 10-speed automatic.

Even More 2022 Ford Explorer Updates to Get Revved Up About

Regardless of trim level, the three-row SUV that is the 2022 Ford Explorer arrives on the scene to the delight of more drivers as both wider and longer. That translates to opportunities with more cargo space and more breathing room for all occupants.

With the third row folded down, 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space jumps to 47.9 cubes or 87.9 behind the front seats. That works well for everything from furniture, to bikes, to all you may need for a weekend getaway in the woods.

A longer and wider 3-row SUV isn’t all that’s turning the heads of more drivers. To learn about some of the ways in which technology enhances safety and entertainment, please check out the last section.

King Ranch and Platinum versions pump up the value even more with standard premium Bang & Olufsen audio.

Differences between the 2021 and 2022 Ford Explorer don’t amount to much with regard to safety features, because the Explorer has always been rated and regarded as one of the safest SUVs on the road.

Automatic Emergency Braking is among the features standard across the board. The “Co-Pilot360 Assist+” package adds such driver-assist features as Adaptive Cruise Control and Active Lane Control.
